Mexico is in many ways a privileged country, with an unbeatable geographical location, being part of one of the most representative economic blocs of the modern era, with a very varied flora and fauna, with rivers, mountains and coasts throughout the territory, without detracting from the large oil reserves that for many decades were the engine of its economy.
However, since the signing of NAFTA with the United States and Canada, an important number of new opportunities for the economy were opened and potentialized. Foreign trade strengthened the economy and quickly replaced the importance of oil in the country. With the opening of NAFTA, manufacturing companies quickly arrived in the country, generating employment, wealth and modernization of national production.
During the period between 1999 and 2020, Mexico has attracted $591,306.6 million dollars in accumulated Foreign Direct Investment, even in recent years when the renegotiation of NAFTA (now T-MEC/USMCA) took place, the flows have increased or have remained at very good levels, which shows the great confidence of foreign companies in the country.

Foreign direct investment flows have also been highly focused in 11 states of the Mexican Republic, with Mexico City, Nuevo Leon, EDOMEX and Puebla standing out. Four highly industrialized states, most of which (except Veracruz) are located in the Central and Northern Zone of the country, which is why the Mexican government has spared no resources in developing the southern zone of the country, and proof of this is the investment in “The Mayan Train”, a work of great importance that seeks to facilitate mobility in the southern states of the country. This project will cover approximately 1,500 km, benefiting the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo, with a projected effective investment of 150 billion pesos (approximately 7.5 million dollars).

From then until today, Mexico has become an ideal country for Foreign Direct Investment and today it is the 14th destination worldwide of all FDI worldwide, which shows the enormous production capacity and the confidence that companies have shown towards investing in the country. The main sectors receiving FDI in 2020 were manufacturing, financial services, transportation, commerce, mining, and mass media.
From the information presented by the SE, it is clear that the manufacturing sector is the preferred sector and generates enormous confidence in Mexico, being also one of the most productive sectors in the country, and of which, the Government has various support programs, as well as certifications for companies that want to invest in Mexico, (IMMEX, VAT and IEPS Certification, PROSEC, Authorized Economic Operator, Strategic Fiscal Precinct).
FDI ATTRACTION PROSPECTS FOR MEXICO IN 2021
According to official information from the Ministry of Economy, Mexico is expected to receive $26,243 million dollars in FDI in 2021 and $27,033 million dollars in 2022.
Undoubtedly, the proximity of the Mexican Republic to the United States, as well as the existence of several treaties and trade agreements with the main economies of the world, offer companies an unbeatable opportunity to establish themselves in a country strategically located to be the most accessible and reliable gateway to the economies of the Americas.
