On May 30, it was announced that Mexico continues to lead the world export of beer, increasing its participation in the international market for the eighth consecutive year.

According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Mexico exported beers to the world for a value of 5,016 million dollars in 2021, contributing 30.3% of world sales, meaning that 3 out of 10 beers exported globally were produced in our country.

The second world exporter was the Netherlands with 2,184 million dollars, which is surprising because it’s less than half of the Mexican amount. In the last eight years, Mexico has almost doubled its participation in exports, being that in 2013 it was only 16.4%.

The United States is the largest importer of Mexican beer, receiving 96.2% of the total last year; Australia (1.3%), China (0.7%), the United Kingdom (0.5%), and the Netherlands (0.3%) were added as main export destinations.

The most outstanding producing companies in Mexico are Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI), Heineken and Constellations Brands. Specifically, the latter has quadrupled its production capacity in the country from 2013 to date, it has invested more than 5.6 billion dollars in Mexico’s Brewing Projects. During the 2022 fiscal year, it has invested approximately $800 million, relocating its new brewery to Veracruz and completing part of a planned expansion project at Cervecería Obregón.

In 2021, foreign direct investment in the beverage industry was $288 million, coming from the United States ($313 million), the United Kingdom (Confidential), and Japan (Confidential).

Historically, from 1999 to the first quarter of 2022, an investment of $46,255.9 million has been accumulated in the industrial branch, with Belgium (US$19,742M,)the United States (US$15,956M), and the Netherlands (US$6,893M) being the main investors. 70% of FDI from beverages and tobacco has gone to brewing, mostly in the states of Nuevo León, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Jalisco and Coahuila.

Likewise, we can remember that at the beginning of this year, the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat (SADER) announced that the agri-food balance (agricultural and agro-industrial) of Mexico reached a surplus of 7,192 million and broke a record in exports in 2021 with a value of 44,442 million dollars, the highest reported in 29 years. Within these, beer participated with 12.6%, and conformed 22.7% of agro-industrial exports, being the agri-food product with the highest export value.
